Robert T. Liggett, age 94, of Greenbelt, MD, died Tuesday, July 19, 2022, just a week shy of his 95th birthday, following a long battle with cancer. Born July 28, 1927 in Washington, D.C. to the late Clyde and Hazel Liggett, he grew up with his only sister Helen in N.E. Washington and graduated from McKinley Technology High School. Bob enlisted in the Navy upon graduating to serve his country in World War II.
After the war, Bob was a baseball player in the Minor Leagues until marrying his beloved wife Irene in 1955. Together they raised a family in Greenbelt, MD and were happily married for 56 years. Never did Bob's love for his wife shine brighter than during her 12 year battle with heart failure when Bob was her faithful, capable and loving care-giver. He was the beloved father of James (Judy) Liggett of Bowie, MD; Jeanne (George) Simmons of Keymar, MD and grand-father to Robert (Olivia) Simmons, Lynne (Luke) Patton and Pamela (Kenneth) Weinberger and great-grandfather to Charlotte and Emily Patton.
Bob had a successful career in the Radiology Department at D.C. General Hospital where he was respected by the doctors and patients alike whom he served until his retirement. Always an avid sportsman, he found a passion for golf in mid-life, was a member of Glenn Dale Golf Club, where he spent many days playing the game in retirement. He was also a member of the Greenbelt American Legion, the Brookland Club and Ascension Catholic Church where he shared friendship and good times with his pals. Bob took great delight in his grand-children's growing up years and could keep up with them on vacations together-- riding bikes, playing on the beach, fishing and crabbing and walking the boardwalk and even riding the roller coasters at amusement parks well into his seventies. He followed the events in his grand-children's young adult lives with keen interest and a smile on his face.
