Alice Lillegard Maxfield

October 21, 1930 — February 17, 2025

Alice Marie Lillegard Maxfield fell asleep in Jesus on February 17, 2025, at the age of 94.

Alice was born the sixth of eight children of the Rev. George and Bernice Lillegard on October 21,

1930, in Boston, MA. As a child, she excelled in school and developed her love for music, especially

the piano.

Alice attended high school at Newton High School in Massachusetts, graduating in 1948. As her

musical debut she played the first movement of the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Boston Pops

Orchestra during her senior year. Alice attended Bethany Lutheran College and received her

Bachelor’s degree in music from the New England Conservatory in 1952. She later achieved the

Master of Music in piano performance at the University of Maryland in 1994.

Alice met her husband, Daniel Paul Maxfield, in 1950 at Harvard Street Lutheran Church in

Cambridge, MA. They married on June 28, 1953, and had five sons whom she always loved and

treasured along with their wives: Paul (Cookie, d. 2022), Karl (Joni), Eric (Darlene), John (Jennifer),

and Mark (Lori). In 1960, they moved their family to Silver Spring, Maryland, when Dan developed his

career in civil service working as an engineer in various agencies of the United States Government.

In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother, Alice was an accomplished pianist, teaching in her

own piano studio for several decades; she was very active in the music community of the Washington

D.C. area, performing for the Friday Morning Music Club, Mu Phi Epsilon, judging auditions many

years for the National Guild of Piano Teachers, and hosting contestants many years for the William

Kappel International Piano Competition at the University of Maryland in the 1980s and 90s. She

served as Music Director at Calvary Lutheran Church for over 50 years, playing the organ and

directing the choir. While she and Dan were living in Victoria Falls in Laurel, Maryland, she delighted

in choral directing, hosting and coordinating opportunities amongst the retirement community to enjoy

classical music and opportunities for fellowship.

Throughout her entire life, Alice held an unwavering faith in God as her heavenly Father and His Son

Jesus as her Lord and Savior, the faith which she instilled in her sons and modelled for everyone who

knew her.

In the nearer presence of God the Father and in the everlasting embrace of Jesus, Alice joins her

parents, George and Bernice, her husband, Dan, and her sisters Betty, Marge, and Laura, and

brothers Larry, George, and David, as well as her daughter-in-law Naomi (Cookie) and grandson,

Julian. She is survived by her brother Norman, her sons, and her grandchildren: Brian, Dane, Troy,

David, Seth, Bret, Katie, Kristen, Kevin, Christian, James, Josiah, and Trevor, and great grandchildren

Flynn, Lennox, and Emrik.

She is now at peace in the arms of her Savior.

John 3:16 was her favorite scripture verse: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only

Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
