Andrea L. Alexander

October 6, 1956 — September 21, 2018

The world lost a beautiful spirit when a huge, passionate, well used heart stopped beating on September 21, 2018.  Andrea L. Alexander, who loved life so much, died peacefully in her sleep 16 days before her 62nd birthday.  She left behind countless people who loved her—people whose lives are forever changed for having known her.

Andrea attended high school in Charleston, South Carolina, and received her Bachelor and Masters degrees  from the University of Maryland.  At Maryland she joined the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and was a sweetheart of Sigma Nu Fraternity.  Andrea thrived in college and formed many lifelong friendships.

Over the last thirty-five years, Andrea  worked for  non-profit organizations and county, state and federal agencies to improve the lives of children and families.    She held various positions that promoted systemic change, created positive school environments and improved the delivery of mental health services.  Andrea was also a licensed clinical counselor specializing in working with young adults and couples in the areas of traumatic events and stressors. . Her thoughtful, wise counsel helped so many.  Many of her former therapy clients have come forward to say how much she impacted their lives and helped form the people they are today.

Andrea was passionate about many things:  mermaids, the beach, tie dye, the color purple, peace signs and sparkles.  Music was an important part of Andrea’s life.  Going to concerts was one of her favorite things to do, and she saw her favorite musicians countless times.  She was an avid fan of local bands, and sang with the band, Dreamstreet, for many years.  Her Stevie Nicks style raspy voice was loved by, many.  Andrea also adored cats!  She always had several of her own, with thousands of pictures on her phone, and even cared for several feral cats.

Andrea was predeceased by her mother and father, Sadie and George Alexander, and her nephew, Scott Bishop.  She leaves behind her beloved wife, Gena Greenhood, her sister, Christine Presley, her nephew, Shawn Bishop, and her great nieces, Madison and Morgan Bishop, cousins and many friends who considered her family.

Andrea Alexander was a unique and special human being.  She had the kind of spirit that permeated every environment she entered.  Her smile, exuberance, her hugs and her laughter…we will never forget.
