Anita Elaine Massey Obarakpor was a beautiful soul. A devoted spouse, daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend. She left this earth to join the angels by God’s side on May 25, 2023. She was 66 years old, born October 15, 1956.
Her parents were Walter and Dorothy Massey of Mayo, Florida where Anita was born. She had four siblings, Jerry, Dale, Kathy, and Linda, all of whom had passed before Anita. So too had her father. (One can only imagine a big family reunion up There upon Anita’s arrival.) Like her siblings, Anita attended Lafayette High School in Mayo, FL. After graduating high school, she attended Bethune Cookman College where she pledged with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. She remained an active member throughout the rest of her life. She went on to obtain her graduate degree in Public Administration at the University of Delaware.
Anita was happy in her life: she always adored her family and friends, and she was able to follow her true passion for helping people by spending most of her career working on nonprofit causes. For 20 years she and a dear friend ran an organization they founded together that provided GED and job training to youth and adults in Washington, DC. She followed her purpose right up to the week she fell ill. Cancer – such a sneaky demon! – completely took her and her family by surprise.
She is survived by her husband Jarvis Omare Obarakpor; two children: Marquesha and Trevor; three grandchildren: Elaina, Samayah and Kairo; and her mother Dorothy Massey.
