In Memoriam, Mrs. Betty S. Wood. With deep sorrow I must inform you all of the heartbreaking demise of our beloved Mom, Betty S. Wood. She left for her heavenly home on Friday, Nov. 6, 2020. She heroically struggled with dementia which developed into Alzheimer’s for almost 20 years. She is at peace now, in a much better place. She was 91 on September 16, 2020.

She is survived by her children, George H. Wood Jr. (Paulette) of Bowie, Md., Karen W. Ascher (Scott) of Germantown, Md., her grandchildren, David Ascher of Germantown, Md. and Jason Ascher of Arlington, Va. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, George H. Wood of Beltsville, Md., her mother, Lucille Porter Skipper, her father, Henry Vincent Skipper, and her cousin Elsie Graham, all of Atlanta Ga.

She was born on September 16, 1929 in Atlanta Ga. She met her loving husband, George H. Wood in college. They were married on September 1, 1950.

They were happily married for 52 years until he passed away in 2002.

She graduated from Brown High School, Atlanta Ga. in 1947 and the University of Georgia in 1951 with a degree in education.

Most of her career she was an elementary school teacher and later on a substitute teacher , teaching grades 1-3 at various schools, including, Palma Cia Methodist Church in Tampa, Fla., Head Start and Lewisdale Elementary in Maryland.

She was a gracious Southern Belle in all ways. She was polite to everyone and the proper use of manners was very important to her. She could also be very determined and stand her ground when she had to. She was a member of numerous women’s organizations doing humanitarian work in Tampa, Fla. and in Maryland. She was a loving mother, who did what she thought was best for her children and family, even if they didn’t always agree with her.

She was very driven and encouraged her children to pursue their goals.

She loved to read and discuss the books with family and friends. She had a dry sense of humor that would come out frequently in her conversation with family and friends. She loved food, mostly eating it, sometimes cooking it. She liked fashion and was always properly dressed for any occasion.

She loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. We miss her terribly.
