Charles "Chuck" Walker, 68, of Beltsville, MD, passed away on Sept 30, 2023, at home with his family.
Chuck was born on July 23, 1955, in Lenoir, NC, to William "Buddy" Walker and Pearl Ann Walker (nee Grist). He has one younger brother, Chris. Through his childhood, Chuck and his family split their time between NC and PG County, MD.
Chuck began his volunteer firefighting career in 1973 at Kentland VFD, following in his father's footsteps, and joined Chillum Adelphi VFD 34 in March 1975 where he served as a Captain, Sargeant, Lieutenant, Assistant Chief, Chief, Vice President, President, and is a Life Member. Chuck served on the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (PGCVFRA) Safety and Standards Committee, scheduled and performed pump testing on apparatus, and served on several other work groups throughout his 50 years of service. Chuck was also heavily involved on the political side of the fire service for the County as well as the State. He served as 2nd Vice President (2010), Vice President (2011), and President (2012, 2014, 2015) for PGCVFRA, and was the Vice President (2019) and President (2020) for the Maryland State Firemen's Association (MSFA). He was a member of the MSFA Executive Committee (2013-2019), the Legislative Committee, Convention Committee, and the VCAF, as well as working with Maryland lawmakers in Annapolis at the State House during Legislative Sessions for the past decade. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame for both Prince George's County (Sept 2011) and for the MSFA (June 2023).
Chuck is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon (Emery) Walker, daughters Alyssa Walker Collado (Ian Collado), Shelby Walker (Jammie Jackson), brother Chris Walker and nephew James Walker, brother in law Arthur Charles "Chuckie" Emery and nephews Jonathan and CW Emery, his Mini Coops (Callie, Keagan, and Brooke Cooper), along with countless other family members and Fire Family.
A memorial service and a fire service will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, at Branchville Volunteer Fire Department (4905 Branchville Rd, College Park MD 20740) at 6:30pm.
In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name and honor to the Chillum Adelphi Volunteer Fire Department and/or the MSFA Bessie Marshall Fund.
