Daniel Paul Maxfield

June 17, 1929 — August 18, 2019

Daniel Paul Maxfield was born to Victor and Elsie Hanser on June 17, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was baptized into the Christian faith shortly after birth and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith in St. Louis in 1943.

After his mother re-married in 1943 he moved to Baltimore, Maryland where his stepfather, Arthur Maxfield was a supervisor in the shipyards. Dan attended Baltimore Polytechnic High School.  In 1947 he entered MIT under the ROTC program and graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate in 1951. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the USAF and in early 1952 was deployed to Korea where he designed and built runways.  In June 1953 he married Alice Marie Lillegard and five sons were born to this union.  In 1954 the Air Force sent him to Purdue University for a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering and in 1956 he was deployed to the European theatre where he served for three years in France and Germany. In 1959 he retired from active duty but remained in the reserves until 1971.  He worked for a year for an engineering firm in Newark, NJ, and in 1960 moved to MD where he began a career in the U.S government, working for the FAA and Departments of Transportation and Energy.  In 1971 he received a Doctorate in Business Administration from George Washington University.

Dan is survived by his wife, his five sons and their wives, Paul (Naomi), Karl (Joni), Eric (Darlene), John (Jennifer) and Mark, eleven grandsons, two granddaughters, and one great-grandson.  He was preceded in death by one grandson.
