Darryl W. Munsey, died in Silver Spring, MD on Thursday, August 25, 2022. Darryl was born in Cheverly, MD, to Robert K. Munsey and Ella C. McClellan. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Cynthia J. Cutright, his brother Robert G. Munsey (Jane), nephews, Matthew (April) and Christopher (Sascha), and a grandniece (Gigi) and grandnephew (Calvin). Darryl grew up in College Park, MD and after graduating from High Point High School, he attended Prince George’s Community College. Darryl then joined the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) where he worked for 40 years, mostly as a Management Analyst (Contract Specialist). During that time, he served both as Chief Representative and President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 2578 which covers NARA bargaining unit employees east of the Rocky Mountains. Darryl also twice served as the President of AFGE Council 260, the umbrella organization representing NARA employees across the nation. Throughout his career, Darryl was a force for social justice in the workplace. His skill at the negotiation table won numerous improvements in conditions, including the early adoption of flexible work schedules in 1984. His tenacity won him the respect of employees and managers alike and stories about his singular, indelible personality are engrained at the Archives. Together, he and his fellow union officers made NARA a better place to work for decades.
Family and friends are invited to share in the celebration of Darryl’s life at Borgwardt Funeral Home, 4400 Powder Mill Road, Beltsville, Maryland, 20705 on Thursday, September 1 with a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. and a memorial program from 11:00 a.m. until noon. Interment will be at 12:30 p.m. at the George Washington/Mt. Lebanon Cemetery at 9500 Riggs Road, Adelphi, MD 20783. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to World Central Kitchen, https://wck.org, or to Feeding America, https://feedingamerica.org
