Dr. Arlyne F. Sher, Phd

Dr. Arlyne Fields Sher, 82, of Potomac Maryland, passed away July 10, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Manhattan, NY, Arlyne was the younger sister of Bernard (Bernie) Fields and loving daughter of Joseph and Mary Fields, all having pre-deceased her. Arlyne studied Psychology at City College of New York, graduating with honors. She then obtained a PhD in Psychology from Syracuse University in 1969. Dr. Sher gave a life-time of service to helping others. In her career, Arlyne worked with the Veterans Administration, Albert Einstein Hospital, and then worked in private practice. She helped thousands of patients over 50 years and served as an Adjunct Professor at Montgomery College.

Arlyne married Robert Harry Sher (now deceased) in 1973. After living in Silver Spring for a few years, the Shers made Potomac their home. They were members of Har Shalom Congregation. Arlyne and Bob were the loving parents of 4 children – Debbie Holten, Karen Parker, Michael Sher and Diane Sher Kessler. Arlyne is lovingly survived by 4 children, daughter-in-law Renee, son-in-law David, 3 grandsons (Steven, Daniel and Justin), and 2 granddaughters (Rachel and Sarah).

A service will be held at Judean Gardens on July 13, 2022 at 11am. Shiva will be observed at the home of Diane Kessler and David Kessler, loving daughter and son-in-law, beginning with the Seduate Havra-ah (Meal of Consolation) at 2PM.

In lieu of flowers, in memory of Dr. Sher, charitable donations may be made to Lungevity, a charity providing research, education and support for those affected by lung cancer, www.lungevity.org.
