Elizabeth Cheeran, wife of the late Cherukutty Cheeran, born to Chacko and Teresa in July of 1928, departed this earthly life and was ushered into heaven on Saturday, August 19, 2023.

Elizabeth was known by many terms of endearment, including “Ammichy”, “Achi”, “Ammini" and “Elishedathi". She grew up in the Thrissur town of Kerala with her 5 siblings. Her childhood was dotted with naughtiness, ranking top in mischief among her cousins, while as a grown-up she was strikingly modest. After her marriage in 1951, the couple moved to Akkikavu in Kunnamkulam, and the next merry moment happened with the birth of their first child, Betty, in 1952.

Customary is the ebb and flow of happiness and fortune, but exceptional was Ammichy’s perseverance. She had strong values and took a stand whenever conflicting scenarios would arise. On the same note, she was incredibly compassionate and had a wonderful sense of humor. Affable and unreserved, she had an amazing memory to recollect entertaining stories of her own.

After the passing of her husband in 1990, she committed herself to maintaining a sense of normalcy, protection and care for her children. The cook in her seemed to be the hidden passion, and she served toothsome dishes with all her love and vigor. Achi's chicken and fish curries would regularly eclipse and outshine other dishes on the table.

Through a combination of her determination and intellect, she was able to leave her native village and travel all the way to the United States by her late sixties. Ammichy was resolute to study and become a full-fledged American citizen. In 2002, she obtained that citizenship and was able to enjoy being surrounded by her dear ones in different parts of the US. In fact, she was always diligent in not skipping a day without talking to a family member from each of her children.

Her early days of dementia, which were yet undiscovered to the family, provided light amusement when she would keep calling the same person again and again until she was reprimanded. After arguing about it, she would mumble and retreat to her whereabouts only to come back energetically for another bout.

Her mornings were notable for the tea, rusk, raisins and blood sugar checks. An unimaginably generous wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Ammichy proved her mettle by spending ample time with all the family, down to even the smallest great grandchildren.

The family has been most grateful for the incredible staff at Autumn Lake who went above and beyond to make sure her final days and weeks were “the most spoiled she had ever been in her entire life”.

Her journey that had started with paddling a canoe finished well in a sailboat.
