Frieda Helene Hartley passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on December 12th, 2024. She was 94 years old and lived a life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Born on November 6th, 1930, in Heidelberg, Germany, Frieda was the beloved daughter of Ernst and Johanna Schmitt.
In 1950, Frieda captured the heart of an American soldier named Kenneth Hartley, marking the beginning of their lifelong marriage filled with love and joy. They traveled extensively with their six children, embracing the richness of diverse cultures and experiences. Among her most treasured memories were camping in the breathtaking Swiss Alps, where the family would immerse themselves in nature's beauty, and witnessing the exhilarating running of the bulls in Spain.
Eventually, they settled in College Park, Maryland, where Frieda created a loving home filled with warmth and joy. She instilled a sense of adventure in her children, encouraging them to explore the world around them and appreciate the beauty of different cultures.
Frieda is survived by her loving children: Charles Hartley (Margie), Mark Hartley (Mary), and Teresa Hartley; her cherished grandchildren: Randy Hawkins (Kara), Charles Hartley Jr., Christina DiSilvestre, Sarah Hughes (Bill), Lisa Hughes, Michael Mapes (Kaitlyn), Stephanie Hughes, and Joshua Mapes; and her adoring great-grandchildren: Woodrow, Cooper, Zachary, Lailah, Jordan, and Jaxson. Frieda is also survived by her sister, Wilhelmina, who remained a source of support and companionship throughout her life, as well as many others both stateside and abroad.
Frieda was predeceased by her beloved husband, Kenneth, who was her partner in life and adventure. She also mourned the loss of her children Heidi Hawkins (Randy), Mary Lorraine Mapes, and Michael Hartley, as well as her granddaughter Christen Hawkins and great-grandson Justin Beasley Jr. Their absence left a profound impact on her heart, yet she always cherished the memories they created together.
As her family gathers to celebrate her life, they remember her infectious laugh, her unwavering support, and the lessons she imparted about love and resilience.
Frieda's legacy will live on in the hearts of those she loved, and her spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Tuesday, December 17th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Borgwardt Funeral Home.
