It is with great sadness that we pass on the news that our beloved mother, Hazer Marie Hancock Fountain, age 94, passed away on October 22, 2018. Hazer had been struggling with severe anemia for the last few years of her life and passed on of natural causes associated with that anemia. She is now at peace with God and reunited with friends and family that have already made the journey.
Hazer was born on September 30, 1924 in Seaboard, North Carolina, and had recently celebrated her 94th birthday with family and friends in Maryland where she lived. As most of you know, Hazer was a beautiful, strong and vibrant woman. One of her favorite pastimes was singing alto in different choral groups throughout her lifetime and sometimes on the fly with renditions of “Hello Dolly.” For those that weren’t aware, Hazer was also an amateur actress in different theater groups in many of the places she lived. She loved working with numbers and passed that trait on to her two grandsons. Hazer will be missed for her unique way of making her presence known, her warming smile and her sense of humor, which she used frequently in her later years. She cared deeply for her family and friends.
In going through various items of Hazer’s after her death we found the following, written by a friend, which captures her essence and how she was known to those around her…….
H is for Hazer Fountain loving Army wife and mother.
A is for singing alto the choral group.
Z is for the zeal in approaching activities that interested her and her zest for life.
E is for enjoying and relaxing with a good romance novel.
R is for remembering happy experiences in Germany.
F is for fondness of a fresh coconut bunny cake.
O is for her outgoing personality.
U is for being up and raring to go to play poker and bridge.
N is for noting with love the development of her grandchildren.
T is for taking college courses that expanded the mind.
A is for attention to classy styles of dress.
I is for interest in movies past and present.
N is for never failing to enjoy a good joke and never missing anyone’s birthday or daylight savings time!
And this being from Hazer’s own hand….
It is not the thought of the wrong we have wrought
That steals o’er us at the setting sun,
But the pangs of regret that our souls beset
Of the things that we have not done.
The beautiful rose still hangs where it grows,
It was sent with a message of love
Or a silent prayer, for one lying there
Awaiting the call from above.
Or perhaps a smile for the discouraged child
With sorrows like we too have known;
Just to give him a lift, a kind word as a gift
He will remember long after he is grown.
Or it may be your part to lighten the heart
Of some mother that the war has left sad;
She gave of her best, a stranger laid him to rest,
Poppies bloom now o’er the grave of her lad.
And sing the song that needs to be sung;
And all along to the end of the way
Do the things we wish we had done.
Hazer is survived by her two children, Walter and Debbie, her two grandchildren Donovan and Shane, and her nieces Margo, Joan and Priscilla. She was pre-deceased by her husband Edmund Fountain in 1994, whom she had married on December 20th, 1952.
A graveside service (simple and concise) and burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, 10 am, December 4, 2018. She will be buried there with our father. Anyone is welcome to attend the burial. Arrive no later than 9:15am at the Administration Building of Arlington National Cemetery.
