Helen Conway Weiss

Helen Conway Weiss born in Baltimore, MD on August 25, 1921 passed away on October 24, 203.  Her parents were Irish immigrants and she was blessed with three sisters and one brother. She grew up in Baltimore and after graduation from Seton High School she went to work for the State of Maryland.

In 1947 she met her future husband, George William WEiss (aka "Bill"). They married December 4, 1948 and were together for 44 years until Bill died unexpectedly in 1992.

With their daughter Ellen, they moved from Baltimore to Beltsville in 1954. Leaving Baltimore was a challenge for her. There was no public transportation in Beltsville so she had to learn to drive a 1950 Ford with a stick shift. She was a homemaker, a chauffer for kids activities, a gardener (she knew her way around a lawn mower). She was happiest when she cooking or doing some project -especially interior painting. Bill used to say if he stood still too long she would paint him. She could lay down a bead of culk as well as any professional painter.

A part of Helen never left Baltimore as evidenced by her loyalty to the old Baltimore Colts and then the Ravens. Since Bill and Ellen outnumbered her, she did become a UMD Terrapin fan enjoying many tail gate parties. She delcared that Baltimore had the best Maryland steamed crabs and crab cakes.

After Bill died, she continued the "snowbird" tradtion spending the cold months in Florida where she made many friendships. The door was always open for anyone who wanted to stop by for a cup of tea.

As she moved into "very" senior citizen territory, she was constantly busy with some house or cooking project. Until the day she died, her cognitive skills were sharp. She never lost her interest in people and the world around her.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Ellen and son-in-law, Don Zebrauskas, and she is sorely missed. She was still remarkable at 102 years.
