James William Mitchell

February 27, 1933 — June 26, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of James “Jimmie” William Mitchell of Silver Spring, MD announces his passing on the evening of Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at the age of 91 in Hyattsville, MD.

Jimmie is survived by his cousins, Carol Geisler of Haines City, FL; Alan Peed of Tallahassee, FL; and Micky Pirrone of Sudlersville, MD, along with a large extended family and friends who were family, including his dear friend Sue Ann Gallagher Scafone of Beltsville, MD. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Masten Mitchell and Anna Louise (Kelly) Mitchell of Washington, D.C.; his aunts and uncles, Austin and Helen Pirrone of Chillum, MD; and Benjamin and Eleanor Peed of Bowie, MD; and his cousins, Donald Peed of Savannah, GA; Tony Pirrone of Greencastle, PA; and Martin Peed of Leesburg, VA.

Jimmie was born on February 27,1933 in Washington, D.C. to James Masten Mitchell and Anna Louise Mitchell. He attended Nativity Catholic School for grades 1-8 and graduated from St. John’s College High School in 1951 and from University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in 1955. He served as an Airman First Class in the Air Force Reserves before becoming a career accountant.

Jimmie made many friends and is remembered as a kind, thoughtful, and gentle soul who could hold a conversation with anyone and was always interested in how the family of his friends and family were doing. He was godfather to at least 11 children and was known by many of his family members as the family historian and patriarch. He had everyone’s birthdays memorized and sent birthday cards to every single family member — even extended cousins several generations removed — every year. He is also remembered for his love of travel and theater as well as his love of desserts, especially ice cream sundaes and chocolate milkshakes, which he enjoyed with friends and family. He was a hard-headed Irishman who was loved by all and is deeply missed.
