Katherine Jean (Bodmer) Rodeffer

August 29, 1932 — January 14, 2018

Katherine Jean Bodmer Rodeffer was called to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 14, 2018.  She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Rev. Robert K. Rodeffer, daughters, Kathy Rodeffer (Gretchen), Carolyn Rodeffer, and Mary Ann Vaughan (Michael);  grandchildren, Christopher Libby, Emma Libby,  Joanna Libby, Rebecca Vaughan, Sarah Rodeffer, Daisy Rehbock,  and Grace Rodeffer.  She is also survived by a large circle of loving family and dear friends.

Jean was born on August 29, 1932 to Mary Katherine Shumate Bodmer and Gordon Augustus Bodmer and grew up in Washington D.C.  She was a graduate of Eastern High School and the University of Maryland (1954,  BA Spanish and English).   She taught at High Point High School until her marriage to Rev. Robert K. Rodeffer in 1955 and beginning of her life as his partner in ministry.  Regardless of the church that they were serving, Jean became involved in the United Methodist Women, teaching Sunday School, directing children's choir, and other ministries.  Always active, Jean worked as a substitute teacher, nursery school teacher, and was a member and officer of organizations such as the Free State Doll Study Club and the Beltsville Young at Heart Club.

A wonderful mother and grandmother, Jean took great pride in the accomplishments and activities of her daughters and grandchildren. She almost never missed attending concerts, special programs, awards ceremonies, athletic events, and graduations.  Grandma's house was magical as it was always stocked with things to delight and interest the children.  While there were "rules", the children never seemed to break any of them and always came home happy.

After a cancer diagnosis in 2015, Jean showed herself to be a tough fighter who was determined to continue to live her life to the fullest.  Multiple cruises (one as late as 2 weeks before her passing), UMD Women's Basketball games, gatherings with friends, club meetings, and church activities filled her time in addition to the regular contact with the many close friends and family.
