Lena Chaney Carter

May 26, 1938 — August 2, 2023

In loving memory of Lena “Lee” Chaney Carter who passed away August 2, 2023, at her daughter’s, Karen’s, home in Sykesville, Maryland. She was the wife of Robert Neil “Bob” Carter to whom she was married 63 years.

Born on May 26, 1938, in Beltsville, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Ruth Chaney. Lee was part of the group that opened DuVal High School in Lanham, Maryland in 1960 as a Physical Education Teacher. Later, she taught physical education at Benjamin Banneker Middle School in Burtonsville, Maryland for over 20 years.  She loved dancing as a member of the DC Hand Dance Club, teaching all sports, knitting, traveling, and, most of all, spending time with her family.  She was known in the Fulton, Maryland area for her 2 weeks of summer swimming lessons.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two children: Billy Carter and his wife, Angie Carter, of Ellicott City, Maryland, and Karen L. Mowder and her partner, Jay Knight, of Sykesville, Maryland, 7 grandchildren: Alexandra, Samantha, and Kenzie Mowder, and Chelsea Lader and her husband, Cory Lader, and Cole and Corinne Carter, and Owen Knight, and two great-grandchildren: Laurel O. Lader and Rome N. Holley. Lee was preceded in death by her son, Robert Lee Carter.

Friends and relatives will be received from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, August 10th at Borgwart’s Funeral Home in Laurel, Maryland.

Church service will be Friday, August 11th, at 12 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fulton, Maryland.

Burial will be private.

Contributions in memory of Lee may be made in lieu of flowers to your favorite charity in Lee’s name.
