Maria E. Kane

April 11, 1948 — June 4, 2014

Maria Elizabeth Sterling (Kane) was born on April 11, 1948 in Augusta, Maine to the late Lewis and Margaret Sterling. She passed away on June 4, 2014 in Columbia, Maryland. She is survived by a brother, David Sterling, step-sister Bonnie Brown, her three sons: Jason (LaDonna), Justin (Kenita) and Jeremy and six grandchildren: Linda, Lillie, Annissa, Joseph, Jonathan and Benjamin Kane. Maria moved to the Washington, D.C. area soon after graduating from Cony High School in Maine in 1967. In the summer of 1970 she married Richard Kane, with whom she spent 43 years. In addition to raising three boys, She also worked as an accounts payable clerk for Toys R Us for 10 years and for the University of Maryland for 19 years. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing and knitting, along with other various arts and crafts projects. Maria was a cancer survivor, having beaten Leukemia between 2001-2002. She stayed in remission until her passing. Maria’s resolve is best illustrated by the fact that after rounds of chemotherapy and other medical procedures, she returned to work for several years after her diagnosis. Today, we would like to celebrate her life and the tough resolve that she relied on throughout her life, regardless of what came her way.
