It is with great sadness that the family of Mary McKinley, Greenbelt, MD, announce her peaceful passing on Thursday August 2, 2018 at the age of 93. She is survived by her two sons, William (Bill) G. McKinley Jr. (Dottie) and John D. McKinley Sr. (Pat); her grandchildren, Katie Norris (Rob), Jay McKinley (Rachel), Sean McKinley, Kenny Sien (Judy), Mike Sien and Richard Sien (Eileen); great grandchildren Cullen, Kiley, Grant, Jordan, Caitlin, Andrew, Ryan, Sydney, Emily. She was preceded in death by her loving husband William G. McKinley Sr., her parents Ernest and Elizabeth Dale (Widby) and her sister Betty Sabin.
Mary was born in Asheville, North Carolina where she spent all of her childhood. She met her husband William (Guy) in Asheville as well. They moved to the Washington, DC area for William’s career. They lived in Bethesda, MD for a short time when Bill and John were young. A few years later, the family moved to their permanent residence in Greenbelt, MD. Mary loved to travel. One of the trips she fondly remembers is a 5 week cross country camping trip to California, when Bill and John were younger, to visit as many national parks as possible. Mary loved the beach, many trips over the years to New Jersey, Florida and Delaware. She had a summer home in Bethany Beach, Delaware and enjoyed many summer trips with family and friends. She stayed active by swimming and aerobics.
Over the years, Mary worked at Union Wallpaper Co, was a seamstress and homemaker. She enjoyed and spoke often about the many wonderful trips and activities that kept her busy with the Golden Age and Homemakers Clubs. She was also a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in Greenbelt.
She was a sweet, caring and loving woman and being there for others was very important to her. She loved unconditionally and was always putting others needs ahead of hers. Family was everything to her, she never missed sending a birthday card, attending a party (and always brought her favorite dish) and making that special phone call. She was always spreading her love with her beautiful smile and loving heart.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life on August 8, 2018 at the Donald V. Borgwardt Funeral Home, 4400 Powder Mill Rd, Beltsville, MD. Visitation 9:30am-11:30am, Funeral 11:30am-12:00pm. A burial service will take place at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD at 1:00pm.
