“The thing is” while 2020 was busy irritating just about everyone on the planet, it saved some extra nonsense for Nathan “Skip” Beers Hughes, III. Surprisingly his death was not due to the spiders living in the shed with the radioactive rocks nor was it due to the gout his mother swore he had. He was thwarted by the tiny buttons on his cell phone and struggled to type anything with his Ogre paws. He quite possibly decided to take his leave to avoid upgrading his flip phone.
Skip grew up in, lived in, and loved Old Greenbelt. His youth was spent with many young Greenbelters and filled with shenanigans. Not all of which he was willing to admit to later on. He loved the Ravens, drinking beer, creeping out kids at Halloween, hunting, fishing, camping, fossil and rock collecting (Who knew you could fit that many tons of rocks in an Old Greenbelt townhouse!?).
Skip worked for District Photo for over 42 years. Something he wasn’t sure was an accomplishment or proof of his insanity. He also worked for Behnke’s Nursery for many years during the holidays and always came home smelling like Christmas trees.
Skip leaves behind his two daughters, Heather Hughes and Corrine Hughes, who will grow up to avenge his death. He was a loving and caring father and his daughters meant the world to him. Skip is also survived by his mother, Elizabeth Buckner, who we all believe is stubborn enough to outlive all her children. Skip’s older brother, Dale Hughes (mom’s favorite), no longer has his little brother to blame things on, pick on, or roll down the stairs. Skip was a dedicated uncle to Kimberly Hughes Barr and Jesse Hughes, teaching them useful life skills they could have used to escape and live in the wild. He was also a great-uncle to Kevin Whitaker, Jonah Hughes, and Avery Hughes. Skip was preceded in death by his father, Nathan “Nat” Beers Hughes, Jr, and his sister, Cynthia Diane Hughes. The family feels like his untimely death was a bit of an excessive way to avoid the holidays with them this year.
The Celebration of Life for Nathan "Skip" Beers Hughes, III will be on October 10th at 2pm at Buddy Attick Lake Park in Greenbelt, MD.
