Richard Mark Barkley died unexpectedly on January 16, 2023 at his residence. He was only 67 years old. The family is deeply saddened and shocked by his sudden death.
Richard was born the fourth of six children on September 6, 1955, to William B. Barkley, Sr. and Mary Louise (Day) Barkley. Both parents predeceased him. He is survived by five brothers and sisters: Lynda (Alan) Wheeler, Susan (Frank) Hunter, William B. (Sally) Barkley, Jr., Roger (Blanche Woodbridge) Barkley, Mary Lou (Garey) Bennington. Richard had three nieces; Katherine and Becka Hunter and Alyson Bennington Jenkins. Richard was great Uncle to Gabriel Hunter and Nora Jenkins.
Richard was also survived by his girlfriend, the love of his life, Blanca Lidia Zelaya. Left to mourn are his family, his many friends from work, his childhood and his neighbors.
Richard grew up in Berwyn Heights, Maryland. He attended grade school at Holy Redeemer, Greenbelt Junior High, Parkdale Senior High and graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. After his graduation from college, Richard entertained the idea of becoming an FBI agent, but eventually ended up with a successful career in construction, forming his own company BAREX, as a site work specialist.
Richard embodied the corporal works of mercy. He loved and helped both of his parents, especially his mom by visits and fixing practically everything in the family home. He visited his sister, Mary Lou, in the Hillhaven nursing home regularly, and brought along friends to visit with her. He carried his sister's Home Depot card in his wallet in case he ran across something she needed which turned out to be many things. He always thought about helping someone. May Richard’s heart of kindness rest in peace.
Richard Barkley’s funeral service will be held at Borgwardt funeral home, 4400 Powder Mill Rd, Beltsville MD, 20705-2751. Phone: 301 937 1707. Saturday February 4, 2023 at 12-3:00PM.
Richard truly loved dogs. So, in lieu of flowers, a donation to K9’s for Warriors, would be an especially fitting tribute to Richard. K9sforwarriors.org.
