Robert Allen Newton, Jr.

October 19, 1958 — June 9, 2019

Robert was born October 19, 1958 in Washington, D.C. at Georgetown University Hospital to Robert Allen Newton Sr., and Sarah Barbara Johnson Newton.  Both parents are deceased. Robert was raised in South East Washington, D.C. He was the oldest of four brothers (Michael –deceased, David and Daniel).  Robert lived with his mother until her death April 1977. After which he went to live with his 86 year old grandmother until her death. Robert is survived by his brother and sister-in-law David/Tammy Newton, his brother Daniel Newton and his Aunt and Uncle John and Linda Johnson of Hixson, Tennessee.

Robert attended schools in Washington, D.C. and Special Education Schools in Prince George’s County Maryland.  He also attend Melwood’s program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Robert worked at the United States Department of Justice Immigration & Naturalization Service as a clerk for 17 years where he had a very good work record.

In 1998 Robert joined Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute of Catholic Charities where he received residential and vocational support services.  He joined The Arc Montgomery County on December 26, 2016 when Catholic Charities ended their residential services. He lived out the rest of his days supported in The Arc’s Community Living services/New Hampshire Avenue group home.  He received weekly Community Learning Services support from Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute, Montgomery County Employment Services in Rockville, MD. For the past few years, Robert was a member of the Life Long Learners, a seniors/retirement program at Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute enjoying life in the community with a group of like-minded seniors.  He enjoyed miniature golfing, bowling, going to the movies, visiting museums, eating at restaurants, exercising at the gym, yoga, Bingo and playing cards.

Robert was a happy, kind, sweet guy who loved life, his staff (especially Raphaelia and Emily who supported and showed him unconditional love for many years prior to him coming to The Arc), friends and staff at work but most of all Robert loved his roommate Mike.  They were the best of friends for 20 plus years. Robert enjoyed vacationing with Mike, going to dances, cooking meals, maintaining their home and watching Wheel of Fortune together. Mike’s family “adopted” Robert as their family.

Robert Allen Newton, Jr. will be sorely missed by the friends he met throughout his lifetime.  He will be laid to rest at Ivy Hill Cemetery Laurel, MD. Thank you to everyone who touched Robert’s life in a special way.
