Rosalia "Rosalie" Dorothy Hartman

October 22, 1924 — February 1, 2021

Riderwood Village

Rosalia Dorothy Hartman “Rosalie”, 96 years young, of Silver Spring, Maryland passed away peacefully on Monday, February 1, 2021 with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.

Rosalie was born in Wisconisco, PA to Joseph and Elizabeth Hirsch on October 22,1924. Rosalie was the youngest of 9 children. There was never a dull moment around this fun loving and close knit family.

Like many women who were born around this time, Rosalie was recruited during WWII to help with the war efforts. She called herself “Rosie the Riveter” as she helped wire and solder the large bombers.

Rosalie married Walter John Nickle in 1948. Together they had 4 children: John Michael, Elizabeth Emma, Jeffrey Lynn and Kevin Walter. Rosalie stayed busy caring for her family and worked evenings as a waitress and clerk at the Government Printing Office. After the sudden death of her husband she found herself being a single parent of 4 small children while holding a full time job at the US Postal Service. A sure struggle back in the 1960s when daycare was nonexistent. With the support of family and her nephew, Dale and his wife, Karen she was able to keep the household going.

In 1973, Rosalie married Charles Edward Hartman. She retired from the US Postal Service and took a part time job at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC. Working part time allowed her to renew and pursue hobbies like crocheting, sewing, and gardening and being a wonderful loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren and eventually 9 great grandchildren.
Rosalie is survived by her 4 children: John Michael Nickle, Elizabeth Emma Folk, Jeffrey Lynn Nickle, Kevin Walter Nickle and their spouses Janet, James, Carol and Gaye; 10 grandchildren: Bradley, Shawn, Bill, Leah, Jocelyn, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Tiffany, Caitlin and Nora; 9 great grandchildren: Liam, Anderson, Silas, Noah, Luciano, Maya, Brooks, Levi and Riley.

Rosalie is preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents and her 8 siblings. What a wonderful life!
