In the early morning hours on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at the age of 85, Samuel A. D’Andelet,Sr., of Centreville, Maryland passed on to be with the Lord at Anne Arundel Medical Center with his family at his side. His death was the result of a heart attack suffered several days earlier. Sam was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 19. He fought in major battles of the Korean War including Inchon Landing, the Battle of Seoul, and the Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin Campaign. For his service in Korea he received 9 service stars. He continued to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve until he retired in 1974. He retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. After the Korean War, Sam began his career in law enforcement as a Maryland State Trooper. From 1953 through1958 he was stationed at Pikesville, Waldorf and Waterloo, MD. In 1958 he became a Deputy U.S. Marshall and worked out of the Washington, D.C. field office until 1971. Between 1964-1970 he was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps National Pistol Team where he earned the title of “distinguished expert” in the 45 pistol and won numerous shooting awards. In 1971 he transferred to the U.S. Marshall’s Baltimore, MD field office where he was the Supervisor of the Warrant Section upon his retirement in 1984 and a member of the Special Operations Group (SOG). Sam was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and taught there as a firearms instructor. He was a member of the U.S. Marshall Pistol team and earned the title of “distinguished expert” with the 357 magnum. He received his A.A. degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. During his career as a Deputy U.S. Marshall, he provided security and protection as the team leader for James Meredith from November 1962 - July 1963 while Meredith attended the University of Mississippi as the first black student admitted to attend this university. He also provided security for Bobby Kennedy after President John Kennedy was assassinated and Premier Brezhnev of the USSR. After his retirement from the U.S. Marshall’s service, Sam worked at the Federal Courthouse in Greenbelt, MD as a security officer until age 70.
Sam was married for 46 years to Betty A. (Fadeley) D’Andelet of Hughesville, MD who died in 2002. They raised their children in the Calverton neighborhood located in Silver Spring, MD. He is survived by his children: Samuel A. D’Andelet, Jr., and daughter-in-law Judy D’Andelet of Beltsville, MD; and Daniel W. D’Andelet of Centreville, Maryland. He also is survived by six grandchildren: Benjamin and his wife Ali, Lindsay, Maxwell, Jack, Robert and Christopher D’Andelet. He is a member of the Chestertown Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm on Thursday, December 4 th , at Borgwardt Funeral Home 4400 Powder Mill Road, Beltsville, MD. Church service will be held on Friday, December 5 th at 11:30am at Berwyn Baptist Church, 4720 Cherokee St, College Park, MD 20740. Funeral service will follow at 1:45pm at Crownsville Veterans Cemetary, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road Crownsville, MD.
