Devoted Father and Grandaddy
Shelton Jackson Turner, 86, passed away on December 21st, 2023, surrounded by his family.
Shelton was born on April 7th, 1937, in Nash County, North Carolina to Rosa and Edgar Turner. Shelton married his elementary school sweetheart, Matilda June Vann, on February 27th, 1960. They have been lovingly married for 63 years.
Shelton lived in College Park, Maryland, where he worked for MITRE corporation for many years. He went on to enjoy his retirement with his family, participate in a barbershop quartet, and watch basketball games at the University of Maryland. His favorite past times were enjoying summers with his family in Oak Island, North Carolina, making pancakes for his grandchildren, cruising around the world with his wife, traveling the great wide open land with his children, listening to country music dreaming of being a cowboy, and catching a UNC game on TV. Shelton would rarely be spotted without his Carolina blue.
He will be especially remembered for his endless generosity, unwavering commitment to his loved ones, loving partnership to his wife, and his infectious laugh that brought joy to everyone around him.
He was a kind, loving, effortlessly humble, and selfless man whose spirit will live on in his family’s hearts and stories for all generations to come. He is survived by his loving wife, Matilda Turner, and his children, Edwin Turner, Matilda (Robert) Nelson and Deborah Turner. His grandchildren, Alexandra, Christopher, Daene, Emily, Benjamin, Ethan, and Madison. His great-grandchildren, Charlie, Joseph, Teagan, Luca, John, June, and Kai.
His funeral will be held on Friday, December 29th, 2023.
