Stephen James Sawyer (83) passed peacefully in his sleep on December 28, 2022

Stephen, known to his friends as Steve and family as Pops, was born to James M and Helen M Sawyer on March 29, 1939, and grew up in Prince Georges County Md. He graduated from Riverdale Senior High and then joined the USAF. He worked as a radar system technician and was deployed in Taiwan to help monitor Chinese aggression towards Taiwan. He left the Air Force and worked in the electronics field rising to Director of Production.

He married Carol Sawyer of Etowah, Tn and had 1 child, James. He loved playing sports; softball, disc golf (PDGA 7712), and ball golf were some of his favorites. He also loved camping and fishing and the occasional deer hunt. He was very active in several scout troops /explorer posts. He helped many young men and women learn how to be men and women. He was a regular at St Mary of the Mills and a former Grand Knight in two different councils of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a 20-year member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he was the Commander of Flotilla 21. He was also an NRA life member.

Steve leaves behind his son James, Grand Daughter Donna, Grand Son Preston, and Great Grand Daughter Aurora. Stephen also leaves behind his brother Mike, sister Jean, daughter in law Alana, and daughter in law Stephanie. He is predeceased by his father James and Mother Helen

He was a great husband, father, and grandfather. Having lunch with his grandchildren and getting to play with his great granddaughter was one of his favorite activities.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

His favorite charity was the Coats for Kids to which he helped to raise funds for
the last several years.
Steve’s viewing will be held at Donald V. Borgwardt Funeral Home, in Beltsville
Md. On Thursday January 5 from 2-4 pm and from 6-8pm. There will be a prayer
service at 6pm.
